Dell has unveiled its new open telecoms ecosystem lab at the company’s Co. Cork campus in Ovens. This is Dell’s first telecoms test facility outside the United States, with the other being located in Round Rock, Texas. The lab is designed to connect engineers with telecom providers from Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with the aim of advancing digital transformation in the sector. Industry partners will have the chance to experiment with and deploy open telecom solutions.
This €2m investment in the lab is the latest from Dell into Ireland. Dell currently employs around 5,000 people across its sites in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. Last year, the company also invested €2m in a customer solutions centre in Cork and opened an innovation lab in Limerick.
Bob Savage, Dell’s Cork site leader and EMEA chief information officer, said: “This new investment places Cork at the heart of Europe’s open telecom ecosystem. Our capable team of engineers and leading industry partners such as Vodafone, Ericsson, VMware and Druid Software can speed up the roll-out of next-generation services.”
The lab was officially opened by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney. He commented: “We welcome Dell Technologies’ investment in its Open Telecom Ecosystem Lab. This not only fortifies Ireland’s reputation as a hub for emerging technology, but also has the potential to create new business opportunities related to 5G and the eventual roll-out of 6G.”
