The Smart D8 initiative, in partnership with local authorities, academia, healthcare, local community, and industry, is seeking applications for its third round of pilot projects. These projects are aimed at improving population health, positive ageing, and connected patients in the Dublin 8 area.

Stephen Brennan, the Smart D8 chair and head of strategy and partnerships at The Digital Hub, spoke of the initiative’s ambition to address real-world health and wellbeing needs: “We want to work with those who can demonstrate their products, services and research in real-world conditions”.

Since the launch of Smart D8 in 2021, the team has worked hard to bring together research and community feedback to design pilot projects that will benefit over 5,000 citizens in the Dublin 8 area. Examples of successful projects include Heart of Our City, which helps to raise awareness and manage cardiovascular disease, and Civic Dollars, which rewards citizens for spending time in local parks.

Jack Lehane, Smart D8 Ecosystem Manager, spoke of the role of community outreach in this initiative: “Community outreach has been at the heart of this initiative since its inception. This new call provides a great opportunity to expand this forward-looking approach to healthcare innovation.”

The Smart D8 consortium includes a number of notable partners such as the Guinness Enterprise Centre, HSE Digital Transformation, Tyndall National Institute, St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, Trinity College Dublin, the National College of Art and Design, and Health Innovation Hub Ireland.

The third round of pilot projects presents a platform for innovation to thrive and is a great opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of citizens in Dublin 8 and beyond. To learn more about the project and how to apply, visit the Smart D8 website.
