Google and the European Commission are working together to create a voluntary Artificial Intelligence (AI) pact for both European and non-European companies before any regulations can be put in place. The agreement was reached after a meeting between Thierry Breton, the EU industry chief, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai in Brussels.
Mr Breton noted that it was important to not wait for the regulations to come into effect and that they should work together to develop the AI pact before that. He also called on EU countries and the EU itself to come to an agreement on the AI rules proposed by the European Commission before the end of the year.
The European Union is making great strides in AI regulation with the AI Act, which could very well be the world’s first full-fledged regulation for the technology. The proposed rules include regulations on facial recognition and biometric surveillance, and EU governments and lawmakers must now work together to create a common text.
Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s antitrust chief, stated at a briefing that the process could be completed by the end of the year. She added that the regulations would also include generative AI algorithms such as ChatGPT.
