Apple has put a stop to its employees using ChatGPT and other external AI tools as the company works on its own technology, according to a document and sources reported on by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. The tech giant is worried about the potential for confidential data to be leaked through the use of these programmes, and is also advising its employees to avoid using Microsoft-run GitHub’s Copilot, which automates software coding.
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, reported last month that it had added an ‘incognito mode’ to the program, so that conversations and history are not stored or used to further AI development.
With more and more attention being focused on the way ChatGPT and its copycats manage the massive amounts of user data that are used to upgrade AI, OpenAI launched the ChatGPT app for Apple’s iOS in the US on Thursday.
Apple, OpenAI, and Microsoft were unavailable for comment when asked.
