Meta is re-evaluating its policies on personalised and political ads for European users, as it strives to meet the demands of EU regulations. According to the Financial Times, some executives are considering a ban on all political campaigns in Europe, as they foresee difficulties in conforming to the EU’s expansive definition of political ads.

On the other hand, the Wall Street Journal reported that certain highly personalised ads may be excluded for European users of Facebook and Instagram, and instead, ads based on broad categories may be presented to them. These potential changes are in response to a compliance deadline from the Ireland Data Protection Commission, which is enforcing the EU’s main privacy law for Meta. Lastly, the European Commission previously warned Meta in December for breaching EU antitrust laws by unfairly restricting competing online classified ads services from advertising on Facebook and Instagram. Meta did not respond to Reuters when asked for comments on the two reports. -Reuters
