Eli Lilly is showing its dedication to Ireland with a massive investment in a new manufacturing facility in Limerick. The pharmaceuticals giant is investing an additional $500 million for the development of the 500,000 sq ft biotech facility, which will produce active ingredients for medicines, including its Alzheimer’s portfolio. It is expected to be fully operational by 2026.
The facility is set to create more than 300 highly skilled jobs and recruitment is scheduled to begin this year. This follows the company’s €200 million expansion of its Kinsale, Co Cork facility in 2017, and the opening of an extension to the manufacturing facility in 2021 with the potential for additional jobs in Cork.
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney, TD, praised Eli Lilly’s investment for highlighting the talent and skills in Ireland. He said the company’s products are helping to fight serious illnesses and he wished the team every success for the future.
Interim CEO of IDA Ireland Mary Buckley also praised the investment, saying it is a testament to Ireland’s attractiveness as a location for investment. Founded in 1876, Eli Lilly first established its Irish operations in 1978 and currently employs more than 2,700 people in Cork.
